Vodka is believed to have originated in Russia and is usually thought of as a Russian drink, however there are now American, English, and German vodkas. It is a neutral grain spirit that can be made with any starch material such as grains or potatoes. Although some think that vodka is made only from potatoes, it is more often made from grains (corn, rye, or wheat).
First distilled at a high proof and then filtered in order to remove the flavor, vodka can be good served both straight or mixed. An excellent mixer due to little flavor, vodka can be found in dozens of drinks including the popular kamikaze and bloody mary.
Flavored vodkas have become increasingly popular, usually served chilled straight up or mixed with juices. One brand of popular vodka now has over twelve different flavors including cinnamon, lemon, lime, peppers, and even chocolate!
